Choose it for a small-scale forest-and-farm stay where standalone villas, local food and hands-on Tohoku experiences take precedence over town convenience.
AZUMA FARM Koiwai is the first destination from the Azuma Farm farm-resort brand, set on an approximately eight-hectare pasture within Koiwai’s forested landscape in Iwate. Its 24 guestrooms are spread between Forest and Garden Villas, rather than gathered in one hotel block. The stay centers on the surrounding woodland, regional food and farm life, with locally grown timber used in the architecture and opportunities to explore the area through guided nature walks, riding and craft experiences.
Hakone, Japan
A serene hot spring resort nestled in the foothills of Mount Fuji, Gora Kadan offers an intimate escape with traditional Japanese hospitality and contemporary luxury. The property seamlessly blends centuries-old onsen culture with refined modern amenities, creating a sanctuary for discerning travellers seeking authentic Japanese experiences.
Kyoto, Japan
In northern Kyoto’s Takagamine district, Aman Kyoto occupies a forest garden at the foothills of Hidari Daimonji mountain. Its 26 rooms, suites and pavilions reinterpret the Japanese ryokan with minimalist, light-filled interiors that open onto wooded grounds. The defining rhythm is quieter than a city-centre stay: wander mossy garden paths, then return to the Aman Spa’s indoor and outdoor onsen, supplied by mineral-rich spring water from near the resort.
Kyoto, Japan
On central Kyoto’s Kamogawa riverbank, this 134-room urban hotel pairs a low-profile, Japanese-inflected setting with contemporary rooms and suites, some oriented to river or Higashiyama views. Zen gardens and a three-story waterfall shape the arrival, while a collection of 409 Japanese artworks brings local culture indoors. Gion and Teramachi are within walking distance, making the hotel a composed base for city exploring as well as a place to retreat between outings.
Pejeng Kangin, Indonesia
In Pejeng Kangin, east of Ubud, HOSHINOYA Bali occupies a jungle valley edged by terraced rice fields and the Pakerisan River. Its 30 villas are arranged around long, canal-like pools, with a separate gazebo projecting toward the forested valley. The design draws on traditional Balinese architecture and craft while incorporating Japanese elements. This is a small, stay-focused resort whose setting and pool-centered layout make the grounds—not a town-center address—the main part of the experience.
Featherston, New Zealand
Above Palliser Bay in Wairarapa, Wharekauhau occupies a 3,000-acre working sheep station between coastal farmland and the Remutaka ranges. The estate pairs its farm heritage with a small collection of 16 Cottage Suites and a separate three-bedroom Foley Villa. Days can include walking or cycling the property, coastal exploration and dining in the lodge’s country-house Dining Room. It is a rural, spread-out stay, with cottages set across the estate rather than clustered as conventional hotel rooms.
Gardiner, United States
Wildflower Farms spreads across roughly 140 acres in Gardiner, where meadows, woodlands, orchards and a working farm sit beneath views of the Shawangunk Ridge. Its 65 freestanding cabins, cottages and suites give the resort a low-rise, dispersed feel rather than a single-hotel-block layout. Days can move between trails, farm activities, seasonal dining and Thistle spa; the landscape and changing seasons are central to the stay.
