Fairmont Grand Del Mar

1 / 10

The takeaway

Choose it for a canyon-side San Diego escape where golf, spa time and a substantial resort setting matter more than being right on the beach.

About the hotel

Fairmont Grand Del Mar spreads across 400 acres beside Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, giving this large San Diego resort a distinctly nature-led setting. Its 249 guestrooms, suites and villas look onto gardens, golf grounds or the canyon. Addison Mizner-inspired Mediterranean architecture—arched openings, carved stone, Italian marble and Roman roof tiles—sets a formal tone, while an 18-hole Tom Fazio course, spa and four pools anchor a stay built around resort time rather than the beach.

Choose it if

You want a resort stay shaped by canyon trails, horseback rides and outdoor activities, rather than a hotel in the middle of the city.
You plan to make golf or spa time central to your trip; both are on property, alongside four pools.
You are traveling with children and want family-focused activities, dining options and pools.

Skip it if

You want to walk directly from the hotel onto the beach; the property’s immediate setting is the canyon preserve, with Del Mar Beach listed as a nearby destination.

Guest discussion

What real people are saying.

Reddit excerpts · separate from Rex’s editorial judgment

One guest felt the high price was hard to justify because they disliked the food throughout their stay, including meals at the pool, bar area, restaurant, and golf course. This is a single guest’s assessment, not a broader pattern.

Discussion is limited; these accounts offer a glimpse rather than a broad verdict.

“the price was pretty high for the fact that the food was not good the entire stay. we ate at the pool, bar area, restaurant, and golf course and didn’t love any meal.”
