Choose Esencia for a discreet, design-conscious beach estate with a duchess’s former house at its heart, rather than a resort embedded in a busy town.
On Xpu-Ha bay between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Hotel Esencia spreads across a 20-hectare coastal estate where jungle gardens meet the Caribbean. The property grew from the private home of an Italian duchess; its whitewashed main house remains a focal point among suites and villas set along garden paths. Beachfront dining, three named restaurants, and a spa give the estate a self-contained feel, while its position away from the main resort centers favors a quieter stretch of coast.

Guests describe notably personal staff relationships, with one saying departures came to feel like leaving friends. Another found persistent seaweed made the beach a drawback, though the pool helped compensate, and says this would have mattered greatly if beach and water access had been a priority.
Discussion is limited; these accounts offer a glimpse rather than a broad verdict.
“The seaweed was horrible our whole time there. Thankfully the pool made up for it, but if beach/water access had been important this would have been a huge issue.”
“By the end of each stay, it honestly felt like we were saying goodbye to friends rather than hotel staff.”

Chocholá, Mexico
Chablé Yucatán is a low-density resort in Chocholá built around a restored 19th-century henequen hacienda and spread across 750 acres of Maya forest. Accommodation is in 40 standalone casitas and villas, rather than a main hotel block, which keeps the feel private and dispersed. The defining experience is less beach holiday than inward-looking retreat: jungle, Mayan-influenced wellness, and a spa arranged around a sacred cenote, with Mérida close enough for a day trip.
Isla Holbox, Mexico
Ser Casasandra is a small beachfront boutique hotel on Isla Holbox, arranged across low-rise buildings beside the sea. Its identity is closely tied to art and well-being: the rooms and shared spaces display artist-made work, while AHAL offers holistic therapies including yoga, meditation and massage. The property also has a pool and three distinct dining venues, from Ser Esencia’s Yucatecan-influenced cooking to Mojito’s beachside Cuban and local dishes. The overall emphasis is on a quiet, art-led island stay rather than a large resort.
